Utö Värdshus' history begins at the end of 1800 when the entire island was purchased by a Mr. Levin who was, at that time, a powerful wholesaler in the Stockholm area. After the purchase, he quickly transformed the northern part of Utö from a former mining community into a vibrant and fashionable seaside resort. Utö became a hot spot with a social scene that attracted the rich and famous. Amongst the various soireés and society balls, celebrities such as Anders Zorn, August Strindberg and the legendary Greta Garbo were often spotted. And so it began. Since then, Utö Värdshus has been developed into a year round Hotel & Conference Center with an award winning restaurant. What used to be the office of the mining company in the old days, now is Utö Värdshus bar and restaurant, with marine and comfy atmosphere. Here you can enjoy a delicious a la carte meal or just today's special and drink everything from coffee to champagne. In the summertime the sunny veranda is open from morning to night and during the winter, when it is dark and chilly, you can snug up in front of the fire with hot chocolate or Swedish glögg.
